The subtitle of this A&E program is "A Murder Mystery," however the mystery is not whodunit, but why. Or, as one of the experts, a rabbi, asks, why would God create people who would murder? The story of the troubled relationship between Adam and Eve's two sons leading to the first recorded murder takes up only 17 verses of Genesis. But the producers of the Mysteries of the Bible series discuss it over 45 minutes in this episode, as a variety of professors mull over the lack of stated motive in the Old Testament and try to flesh out the story through speculation and gleanings from ancient Hebrew text. Narrator Richard Kiley asks the questions and Jean Simmons reads biblical and other quotations as the story is illustrated both by paintings and actors silently portraying the brothers. The tape is divided into five acts (such as "The Crime," "The Fugitive") and follows the postmurder life of Cain as he goes on the run, founds a village, and settles down (with a sister?) to raise a family--only to be killed accidentally by one of its members. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description
Their story is one of the most chilling in the Bible: a tale of cold- blooded murder between the world's first brothers. But while Genesis records the identity of Abel's killer, the world's first death remains, in essence, a mystery. What compelled Cain to kill his only brother? How did he do it? Did Cain realize that he was capable of ending Abel's life? And what of the strange paradoxes in the scripture: Cain's fear of strangers in an unpopulated world and the sudden appearance of a future wife? In this fascinating investigation, modern scholars work like detectives, searching for clues in the 17 verses that describe humanity's first tragic crime and explore its ultimate message of resiliency and hope.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing insight into this age-old Bible story   January 18, 2008
Although not nearly as in-depth as a similar program produced by National Geographic ("Cain and Abel: Brothers At War"), nevertheless, the interviewees present some sound, intriguing insights into this brief yet far-reaching story of the first murder, between brothers. My preference (and thus only 3 stars) is for the National Geographic program, though, as relevant texts (including apocryphal and traditional)from Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are brought into the discussion to shed light on the subject in the NG approach. However, the NG program is not yet available on video or DVD, and can only be seen on NG's broadcast channel; it's well worth the trouble.
