5 out of 5 stars I really like it.   December 15, 2008

I am a Lutheran pastor in the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. I never thought I would like the NRSV, but find it very nice.

Every so often I buy a new study Bible to use as a tool in developing sermons, etc. I had begun to think about the new ESV Study Bible, but actually examining a copy left me disappointed. I wrote a review there, but will only say that it never mentions important aspects of texts I examined in its notes. For the most part, the NISB does. I was sufficiently impressed with the notes I examined in the NISB that I bought it after not a long time looking at it. In the same amount of time I had determined I would not buy the ESV Study Bible.

The NISB does include some things I will filter out. These would be things related to the documentary hypothesis in the Pentateuch. But, by and large, it does a good job of letting the Bible text govern the notes without bending the text to fit a bias. It also includes mention that one group will understand something in one way, while another group will use the same passage for one of its distinctive doctrines that is quite different from the teaching of other groups.

I like cross references and the NISB does not have a separate system for cross references. But, it does give reference passages at important places in the commentary notes.

So far, I am very pleased with this study Bible.

Update: At John 3 there is a special inset note about eternal life that puzzles me. Certainly, it seems to run counter to Revelation 2:7, et al., and notes in a Bible dictionary I often use. And, the notes on the covenant renewing aspects of the fellowship sacrifice in Leviticus 3 and others are very weak compared to notes on 'zevach' in Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew-English Lexicon to the Old Testament. But, no one work can be perfect or complete.

4 out of 5 stars The New Interpreters Study Bible   December 14, 2008
While I am still in the process of getting used to this expertly formed reference, I am finding it to be an excellent text with balanced sources and explanations. There is a clearer connection with the historical placement of the various passages and their interpretations.
An enormous amount of work has gone into the preparation of this text by and extraordinarily qualified group of authors. We are definitely the beneficiaries of outstanding accomplishment.
