Amazon.com Review
The double whammy of successful infertility treatments and an increase in the number of women having children later in life has resulted in a staggering--but perhaps not surprising--phenomenon: a tremendous increase in twin, triple, and quadruple births. When Youre Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads is an outstanding, much-needed addition to the pregnancy genre for women who face the alternating joy, terror, and ambivalence associated with carrying, delivering, and coping with young multiples.

Subjects like nutrition, mom's changing body and emotions, fetal development, potential complications, and labor and delivery take on new meaning when you add another baby or two to the standard equation. With the goal of minimizing risk factors associated with multiple births, Dr. Barbara Luke and her team of writers cover each subject with a buoyant determination to tell it all and tell it well--avoiding the typical "how to name and dress your twins" issues. Accompanying the detailed medical perspective of Dr. Luke are personal experiences gathered from the journals of a few articulate moms, making each subject as real as it is educational. Simple illustrations, valuable charts (including one to plot and monitor fetal growth in grams or pounds), specific menu examples (like how can you consume 4,500 calories if you're expecting quads???), and lots of reassurance make this book a winner. --Liane Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource when expecting multiples   December 29, 2008

I am only 13 weeks pregnant with twins, but have found that this book is extremely useful! As several other reviewers have noted many books do not give proper information on multiples. Even doctors and nurses are vague about the special requirements of growing multiples. The book handles all angles (positive and negative) in a helpful and non-threatening way. It emphasizes dietary requirements, which are really important, and things to watch for during pregnancy to prevent problems, and advice to help you talk intelligently with your doctors. It does not give a week by week development guide, but those were easy enough to find online and free. This has much more useful information than any other book I have bought or borrowed on pregnancy.

2 out of 5 stars this book really turned me off   December 23, 2008

when i found out i was having twins (surprise) i ran to find anything i could read on the subject. i was very offended by the author's suggestion that most twin pregnancies are so precious... suggesting you should gain large amounts of weight (to support the babies), which my doctor advised against, and that you should not exercise. both of these things are myths that should not be continued in print!

5 out of 5 stars The absolute MUST HAVE book for a healthy twin pregnancy!!   November 19, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I am convinced that this book is responsible for my making it to 38 weeks and delivering such big, healthy twins (7.5 and 5.5 lbs!). The thing I loved most about the book is that it focuses on what YOU can do to impact your pregnancy and it kept me focused and positive throughout. It seems every time I left the doctor's office I was in tears due to all of the warnings about twin pregnancy, but Dr. Luke's advice was positive and calming without being scary or dwelling on those things that are out of one's control. Following Dr. Luke's advice on rest and diet enabled me to stay at home and enjoy a relatively uneventful pregnancy with my high risk identical twins. I felt as though the advice on twins in the other pregnancy books was way off and even my doctor's office seemed to miss the boat regarding nutrition, treating my twin pregnancy as a regular pregnancy plus five or ten pounds. I followed Dr. Luke's advice - not my doctor's - on nutrition and it was this book that opened my eyes to some potentially damaging medication interactions that my doctor's office didn't mention. With this book, I felt as if I had my own personal twin specialist guiding me through the pregnancy and I felt very validated for all of the things I was experiencing that weren't typical of a "normal" single pregnancy. Buy this book! I tell everyone I know about it. I even suggested that my OB get a copy for her practice! Thank you, thank you Dr. Luke, I will always be grateful that I came across this book when I did!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great resource about pregnancy- not so much about birthing them!   October 20, 2008

This book was a great resource to providing information on how to have a healthy pregnancy with twins. I just wish my Doctor could have read it too!
One thing it didn't help with so much was the means by which to get the babies out in the safest way. I ended up with a c-section and after lots and lots of research have come to the conclusion that it was unnecessary, especially after having my first singleton all naturally.

5 out of 5 stars Maximizes pregnancy outcome!   September 24, 2008

This book was one of the keys to my healthy twin pregnancy. True, it's hard to follow the nutritional advice to the letter, but you just do the best you can. I promise that if you're not a big fan of meat, you will get used to it when you know that you're helping your babies grow. The book also contains nutritional advice for vegetarians. I started out at a BMI of 18 and carried my twins to 38 weeks (scheduled c-section, never went into labor) with no complications and no bedrest. Both were born at about 6.5 pounds each, spent no time in the NICU, roomed in with us at the hospital, and came home with us. Doctors, nurses, etc were impressed at their size and health. The advice in this book drove me to make sure that my workweek did not exceed 40 hours (with a note from the doctor and a desk job which made it possible), and my husband handled literally all household chores starting around 30 weeks when I really needed to have my feet up after work. Dr. Luke says not to expect to work past 28 weeks but I think it's possible if your managers are supportive, if you can stay off your feet, and if you can limit stress on the job. I worked up to 37.5 weeks. Drink water, water, water! My only trip to L&D due to having more than 6 contractions/hour were due purely to dehydration. If you're expecting twins or supertwins, get this book! I was reluctant to buy any book on multiples until I passed my 12th week (didn't want to jinx myself with all the scare on vanishing twin syndrome), but this book has lots of info on maximizing the outcome of your pregnancy as soon as you know you're pregnant with twins/multiples so if you're not afraid of buying before 12 weeks, then this is a must read. Also contains helpful advice on surviving the first few weeks at home with your new babies.
